Dr Caroline Johnson for Sleaford and North Hykeham

Last night I visited CCHQ to make phone calls for our candidate for the Sleaford and North Hykeham by-election, Dr Caroline Johnson MP. Caroline is an excellent candidate and as a Consultant Paediatrician is well versed in public service. She is completely behind the Government's plans for Brexit and if elected is determined deliver on the decision made by the British people.

Andover set for Brand New Leisure Centre

I'm delighted to announce that Andover is set for a brand new Leisure Centre as we can now reveal that Places for People Leisure has been awarded the new leisure contract by Test Valley Borough Council. We took the decision at a Full Council meeting earlier this month but had to wait for a legal standstill period to pass before announcing the decision. The new Andover Leisure Centre, built on the current site, will feature a 165-station fitness suite including a virtual cycling studio, 25m six lane pool with 15m learner pool with moveable floor, dance studios, eight court sports hall,...

We Will Remember Them and What They Fought For

This morning I joined hundreds of people in the garden of remembrance at St Mary's church to pay my respects to the men of Andover who have died in war. It may be a controversial opinion but for me Remembrance Sunday is not just a day of reflection and contemplation but also of celebration. The triumphalism of light over darkness, of good over evil and of freedom over tyranny. I don't say that to glorify war but to remember the values that we hold dear. The values that in the summer of 1944 inspired British soldiers and our allies half a world away to arrive on this continent and fight for...

Council Endorses Reduction in Councillor Numbers

Yesterday evening I took a recommendation through Full Council to reduce the amount of Councillors on Test Valley BoroughCouncil from 48 to 43. The proposal was supported by representatives of both political parties and of none. The opportunity to review the number of Councillors comes as a result of a boundary review being conducted by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England. It has been triggered because the number of voters in each ward are significantly different, due to population growth in some areas of Test Valley. I was keen to take this opportunity to reduce the...

Annual Leaf Clearance Gets Underway

Autumn is well and with us, and whilst we're all admiring the beautiful canvass of red, gold and brown the leaves are falling, and will soon turn to a slippery sludge. Which is why Test Valley Borough Council's annual leaf clearance got underway earlier this week. The Environmental Services team have spent the last two days in King Arthurs Way, today and tomorrow in Cricketers Way before returning to King Arthurs Way several times, and visiting Roman Way in the next four weeks. The team target the known hotspots and respond to ad-hoc requests. If there is a particularly hazardous area of...

Widening Participation in Higher Education

Did you know that over 50 young people a year from just five Local Government wards, including Alamein here in Andover, miss out on going to university? On Friday, I attended the launch of the Southern Policy Centre's 'Widening Participation in Higher Education' report at Southampton Solent University. The study looked in depth at five southern wards including Newport South on the Isle of Wight, Coxford in Southampton, Paulsgrove in Portsmouth, Newtown in Poole and Alamein here in Andover. The report revealed that students who get good GCSE results in these wards are less likely to go to...

Road Safety Improvements outside Roman Way School

For several years I have been pressing the case for enhanced road safety outside Roman Way School. Following meetings with highway officers and the headteacher, I arranged for 'SLOW' road markings to be painted in the vicinity of the school; for double yellow lines opposite Witan Close, to improve the sight lines for children crossing; road safety talks from the Fire Service and high-vis jackets for every child that wanted one, funded by Taylor Wimpey. Following concerns raised by parents, I have also been campaigning for a crossing. In fact the Borough Council's legal agreement with the developer of Augusta...
